COME4GLOBAL: Mental Health Literacy Training

The Faculty of Health Sciences of the Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU-FoHS) Eswatini in partnership with the Turku University of Applied Sciences (TUAS) Finland engaged in a one-week mental health literacy training (02 – 06 October 2023). The training was a capacity development event that capacitated staff and students from both universities on issues related to the impact of mental health on Eswatini and Finland community. Twenty-five (25) students from both institutions participated in this pilot training.

The training encompassed clinical module with practical components undertaken at various mental health facilities within the country where services such as mental health literacy, mental health promotion and mental health resilience are offered. During this time, trainees observed, interacted with people challenged with mental health issues, and made relevant documentation of acquired knowledge. The team visited Mahwalala Red Cross, Mbabane Government Hospital Psychiatry Department, National Psychiatric Hospital, Eswatini Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA), and Association of Students Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking (SADAT).

The opening and closing event of the one-week training was graced by the university’s Vice Chancellor and Pro-Vice Chancellor Administration. Delegates (lecturers and students) from both universities expressed their appreciation for the support and warm atmosphere they received from the Faculty of Health Sciences and management. The students were empowered with community mobilization and awareness creation skills, and interventions to encourage communities to seek help and minimize stigma associated with mental health services.
