SANU FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES ENACTUS STUDENTS ATTEND AFRICA GREEN WASTE AND ENERGY CONFERENCE & GREEN EXPO 2019 IN ZIMBABWE
Manzini – Southern Africa Nazarene University, Faculty of Health Sciences (SANU-FOHS) Enactus is invited to attend Africa Green Waste & Energy Conference and Green Expo 2019 in Harare Zimbabwe. The event is starting on 27- 29 June 2019.
The FOHS Enactus got this opportunity after their project was selected for presentation in the Africa Green Waste and Energy & Green Expo 2019 Conference. The FOHS Enactus team were also sponsored meals and accommodation in Zimbabwe. The Swaziland National Youth Council (SNYC) assisted with transport costs.
During a briefing at the Administration Offices, just before their departure, the Chief Executive Officer of the group, Ms. Busiswa Dlamini, stated that the Golden Waste project is well aligned with the objectives of the Green Waste & Energy Conference since is focuses on the means for proper food waste disposal that uses biodegradable food waste to produce a liquid by-product and a liquid fertilizer. She further explained that the end-product adds value in that from it they produce a detergent, pesticide and compost. Elaborating on their concept, Dlamini stated that the project entails feeding biodegradable food waste into a bio-digester together with effective microorganisms, which is left to ferment anaerobically under shelter for two (2) weeks. This then yields the liquid part and then the sludge is buried for 4 weeks to yield the organic compost.
The FOHS-Enactus secured the first spot on the Preliminary Enactus competitions in the Kingdom of Eswatini because their project proved to be unique. This project prevents the use of land as waste disposal sites for the food; thereby reducing the effect of greenhouse gases which are produced with the improper disposal of food waste. Apart from these climate change or environmental goals, the project also aligns with national socio-economic or sustainability goals and innovation aspirations of the University.
Ms Dlamini has appealed to friends and partners of the University to support this innovation so that they get more resources to conduct further research. Explaining, she said “what they have observed so far was that their pesticide is a bio-friendly killer of mosquitoes and cockroaches”. She indicated they want to do more investigations to fully understand and unleash the potential of their project and its by-products.
