BSc. Medical Laboratory Sciences

Overview of the Programme

This programme is designed to educate and train Laboratory professionals to proficiently conduct testing in clinical laboratory. Its main focus is on development of competencies, professional attributes, ethical & compassionate, and Managerial skills. Upon graduating, students can pursue careers in medical laboratories in hospitals, health services, private clinics, medical biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, forensic and environmental science sectors, agricultural and food testing industries.

Admission Requirements

A minimum of six (6) credit passes, including English, Mathematics, two Sciences (Biology & Physical Science/Physics & Chemistry subjects) plus any other two subjects, obtained in not more than two sittings, in either 0 level, I.G.C.S.E., S.G.C.S.E., H.I.G.C.S.E and A level. Mature age students are also admitted depending on their results of mature age examination results.

Duration

This degree is studied over a period of four (4) years or 8 semesters on a full-time basis.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can expect to gain early recognition and registration as medical laboratory scientists in Swaziland, and can also work in most other countries. Medical laboratory scientists diagnose and treat diseases. There is an increasing shortage of medical laboratory scientists worldwide. There are also many opportunities for postgraduate study, either in medical laboratory science, or in one of the related health sciences such as forensic pathology, or molecular pathology.
