Department of Nursing Sciences

The Department of Nursing Science was established in 1928 under the Nazarene College of Nursing and it was the first to offer Nursing Education in Swaziland under the leadership of Dr David Hynd.

The BSNM programme is distinct in that it has a stronger component of Nursing Research, Community Health Nursing, Palliative care, and the Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health.

The Department of Nursing Science was established in 1928 under the Nazarene College of Nursing and it was the first to offer Nursing Education in Swaziland under the leadership of Dr David Hynd.

Since inception, the department has led the delivery of quality nursing education, which has seen Southern Africa Nazarene University Nurses being of high demand by reputable health related institutions  in Swaziland, the SADC region  and internationally.

The Department of Nursing Science offers a quality syllabus of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery (BSNM) for a period of four years which entails general nursing and Midwifery. It also prides itself in providing such quality education through the knowledge and experience of highly qualified lecturers and support staff.

The BSNM programme is distinct in that it has a stronger component of Nursing Research, Community Health Nursing, Palliative care, and the Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health. It also focuses on the Nursing and Midwifery services, which are one of the main pillars of health delivery system in the Kingdom. Clinical Placement:

As required by the curriculum, first year Students are assigned to wellness areas: i. e. Preschools, Primary schools, community centres where they familiarize themselves with well persons before they are introduced to the sick and critical individuals in acute care settings. In the second year of training they are introduced to community settings, mostly in semi urban and rural areas, where they study various medical case studies amongst individuals, families and communities.  And are also introduced to an acute care setting. In the third year, they are introduced to specialty areas, i.e. Operating room, Mental and psychiatry experience and advanced community health, where they can diagnose a community. They attend community clinics and public health units where they treat minor ailments and render public health services. In the last year of training, they concentrate on Midwifery practice and carry out a Research project. Clinical sites include urban, rural, clinics/ Health centres and hospitals.

Registration for entry into practice:

Following the four years of training, graduates have to register with the Swaziland Nursing Council (SNC) which is a regulatory body that monitors and control nursing as a profession in the country. Upon completion of degree, graduates will be required to sit for an SNC examination that will determine their entry into practice. In addition to this registration, the products of the BSNM programme are expected to be members of the Swaziland Nursing Association (SNA), which is a professional body taking care of their professional and social life.
