Faculty of Education hosted High School for the Deaf

On March 11, 2025, the Faculty of Education at SANU hosted students and teachers from the High School for the Deaf under their programme, “Are You Okay” initiative dubbed ‘AYO’. This visit was designed to give the guests an in-depth look at our inclusive educational environment and to explore the possibilities of admission into our esteemed University. During their time at the Faculty, visitors were guided through various facilities, showcasing our: i)Spectacular learning hub with collaborative learning space, ii) All-inclusive library, one that actively strives to be welcoming and accessible to all members of its community, and iii) Braille Lab, which the SANU community calls an iconic figure in the Faculty of Education.

In addition to the tour, members of the Faculty administration took the time to engage with the group, sharing insights about our commitment to diversity and inclusion in education. Hearing-impaired students currently enrolled at SANU also participated in the discussion, recounting their personal experiences and the challenges they overcame to pursue their academic goals. This enriching exchange served to inspire the prospective students and educators, emphasizing the supportive community that awaits them at our university.

While acknowledging with thanks SANU’s efforts to also include students with hearing impairment in their heterogeneity, in her closing remarks, one of the team’s Specialist Educator, Gcinile Shongwe gave insights into how SANU can further create supportive learning environment(s) for such students, which is the hallmark of Inclusive Education.
