SANU Launches Pharmacy Practice Laboratory to Strengthen Hands-On Training

Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU) has marked a major milestone in health sciences education with the launch of its Pharmacy Practice Laboratory, a facility aimed at improving practical training and preparing students for professional pharmacy roles. The opening ceremony, attended by University leadership, stakeholders, and partners from the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, underscored SANU’s commitment to experiential, competency-based learning. The laboratory simulates a real-world retail pharmacy environment, allowing students to build skills in dispensing, patient counselling, communication, and professional decision-making.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Faith Mlotsa-Mngomezulu noted that the facility helps bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, ensuring graduates are equipped with both knowledge and the confidence to serve patients and communities effectively. The laboratory responds to a need within the Department of Pharmacy for stronger in-house practical training.
SANU also acknowledged the contributions of key partners who made the project possible. AVOMA Pharma supported the design and supplied medications, while additional contributions came from Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital Pharmacy, Simpson Pharmaceuticals, and RGCO, enhancing the learning environment. Artemis Pharmaceuticals further supported the department by providing laboratory coats for staff, promoting professionalism and readiness for practical sessions.
Head of the Department of Pharmacy, Ms. Sikhondze, expressed appreciation for the collaboration, describing the laboratory as a product of shared vision and commitment to quality pharmacy education. The facility is expected to provide students with valuable hands-on experience in a supportive setting before they transition to clinical and retail environments.
Emphasizing the value of the partnership, Mr. Stankoczi of AVOMA Pharma said that investing in healthcare is ultimately an investment in future professionals who will serve the nation, adding that it is an honour to support such a transformative initiative. Ms. Zwane, Deputy Director of Pharmaceutical Services, highlighted the laboratory’s role in bridging the gap between theory and practice and commended SANU for continuing to implement initiatives that strengthen students’ practical skills.
As SANU continues to strengthen its academic infrastructure and partnerships, initiatives like this underscore its commitment to training competent healthcare professionals.
