Southern Africa Nazarene University (SANU), in collaboration with the non-governmental organisation Beyond the Walls and His Majesty’s Correctional Services, is championing inclusive education and rehabilitation through digital skills capacitation of inmates. Inmates from Mawelawela Women’s Correctional Centre today received certificates in Basic Digital Literacy after completing an intensive eight-month training programme. This initiative aligns with His Majesty’s Correctional Services’ philosophy, which is grounded in empowerment, behavioural transformation, rehabilitation, and the successful reintegration of inmates into society.
The Certificate Awarding Ceremony was held on Thursday, 28 May 2026, at SANU and was officiated by the Honourable Minister of Education and Training, MP Owen Nxumalo. Speaking during the event, the Honourable Minister emphasised that education and skills development remain critical tools in preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society upon completion of their sentences, enabling them to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose. “Education must reach everyone because it has the power to transform lives and create new opportunities,” said the Minister.
Also in attendance were the Vice Chancellor of SANU, Dr. Faith Mlotsa-Mngomezulu; the representative of the General Commissioner of His Majesty’s Correctional Services, Deputy Commissioner General, Bongani Khumalo; officials from His Majesty’s Correctional Services; the Founding Director of Beyond the Walls and beneficiary of the 2018 Mandela Washington Fellowship, Mr. Sabelo Mlangeni; Representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Eswatini; members of SANU Management and church leaders.
Representing the Commissioner General of His Majesty’s Correctional Services, Deputy Commissioner General Bongani Khumalo commended the initiative for strengthening rehabilitation and skills development within correctional facilities.
Also speaking at the event, the Vice Chancellor of SANU emphasised the University’s commitment to advancing inclusive and transformative education, strengthening community engagement, and fostering partnerships that create meaningful opportunities for all members of society. She further emphasised the importance of integrating skills development into academic curricula to prepare graduates for the demands of the modern workplace and the rapidly evolving digital
